Here’s something interesting. The U.S. Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) program made the on-line Op Ed page of The Jerusalem Post yesterday! The opinionated writer was Amir Tal, head of In Good Company — Looking Beyond. His organization is a non-profit dedicated to reducing stigma and discrimination against people suffering with psychiatric disabilities. Hmm… I’m in favor of that!
Mr. Tal alludes to the U.S. WOTC program as an example of government policy that provides an incentive for business to hire and retain individuals with disabilities. He says,
“In the US, for example, there are seven different tax credits available to companies which hire individuals with disabilities. One of them, the Work Opportunity Tax Credit, allows employers tax credits of up to $2,400. These kinds of incentives may make Israeli employers realize that they can “do good” and “do well.”
Mr. Tal winds up his remarks with a call to action. “I call to the new government to promote legislation and regulations that will encourage employers to hire people with disabilities – for the sake of those that struggle with disability and for the sake of society.”
Nicely put. In my opinion, almost any tax code change that allows employers to retain more of their profits is a good thing. Incentive programs like WOTC combine such tax benefits with an additional incentive for private business people to help people who may be in need.
