California Assemblyman Cameron Smyth published an article today in Fox and Hounds Daily making strong arguments for maintaining California’s enterprise zone program. Smyth, a Republican, is Chairman of the Assembly Local Government Committee and represents the state’s 38th Assembly District, which includes the cities of Los Angeles, Santa Clarita, Simi Valley and Glendale.

A few quotes:

Today, I am varying from my usual approach in order to share an opinion with you. (Of course, we will also keep watching for important developments in state and federal news.)
The California enterprise zone program offers lower state taxes to employers setting up operations inside any of 42 zones located throughout the state. For businesses using the program, it has been a godsend in the current economic crisis. (more…)

Mayor Marsha McLean of the City of Santa Clarita joined defenders of California’s Redevelopment Agencies and Enterprise Zones while speaking at a City Council meeting yesterday. Refering to Governor Jerry Brown’s draconian proposals to eliminate both programs as part of his balance-the-budget plan, McLean said
“Our enterprise zones have been a tremendous boon,” said McLean. “[Governor Brown] wants to abolish those as well. We know the budget has to be balanced but this isn’t the way to go.” (more…)
