A Little History: This is Nothing New. The Work opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) was created by the Small Business Job Protection Act of 1996. This Act authorized WOTC for a 12-month period. Then, in 1997, WOTC was re-authorized and extended for 9 months, followed by an additional 12 months in 1998. This process of expiration and re-authorization has been repeated by Congress nine times during the past 12 years. (more…)

House Resolution 5845 was introduced by Congressman Ted Poe of Texas and referred to the House Ways and Means Committee last Friday (on May 18th). As of this afternoon, the actual text of the bill is not yet available. The title, however, is listed as
H.R.5845 – To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to extend the work opportunity tax credit for veterans and to allow an exemption from an employer’s employment taxes in an amount equivalent to the value of such credit.

In January, I mentioned that Minnesota’s Democrat Governor Mark Dayton was proposing state jobs tax credits to reward employers who hire veterans, unemployed workers, and recent graduates. The Ways and Means Subcommittee on Select Revenue Measures has scheduled a hearing on Tax Extenders for 10:00 AM on Thursday, April 26th. That is in six days.
This is an Urgent Matter for the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) and other tax extenders because the policy of the Ways and Means Committee and the Republican House leadership will largely be set by the decisions flowing from this discussion. (more…)PUBLISHED IN
