According to House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (Dem) the U.S. House of Representatives will vote on the Small Business Jobs Bill next week. HR 5297 was passed by the Senate earlier this week, and sent back to the House for approval. It is believed that if the bill passes the House this time, it will also be signed by President Obama. Good news for businesses within Merced County, California! The California Department of Housing and Community Development has approved a 1,877 acre expansion of the Merced Regional Enterprise Zone. Merced County’s Board of Supervisors had voted to expand the zone in April 2010. (more…)

The U.S. Senate has passed HR 5297, the Small Business Jobs Bill, by a vote of 61-37. The bill, which will be highly beneficial to some of my clients, must now go back to the House of Representatives for reconsideration there.
If passed into law, this bill will include a number of provisions relevant to hiring-based tax incentives like the Work Opportunity Tax Credit and the federal Empowerment Zone Employment Credit. (more…)

Can this be true? SB 974 was introduced by California Senator Darrell Steinberg (Dem) early this year in an attempt to substantially limit the impact of California’s Enterprise Zone Hiring Credit program. According to an article in the Santa Clarita Valley Signal today, “officials from Steinberg’s office said Wednesday that the legislation will probably not become law.” (more…)

I received an email this morning from the Bureau of Workforce Development Partnership, PA Department of Labor & Industry announcing that they have discovered a glitch in their information system. As a result, a number of invalid WOTC employee certifications have been issued. The email requests that certain TANF-related certifications be returned to their office. (more…)

A multi-jurisdictional bid for a new enterprise zone designation is well underway by the California communities of Cathedral City, Desert Hot Springs and Palm Springs. While these communities are closely tied geographically to the existing Coachella Valley Enterprise Zone, sponsors believe the two zones will complement each other for the benefit of the region. Of most interest to this forum is that this bill would extend the HIRE Act’s Payroll Tax Exemption through the end of 2011.
